What is Discordbot?

Discordbot is the tool Discord uses to visit links and build link previews. Discord says it visits a link only when someone shares it in a message, makes a single GET request and executes no code on the page. Discord caches a preview for about 30 minutes.

Operator
Discord
Purpose
Visits a link shared in a Discord message to build its preview.
robots.txt token
Discordbot
Example user agent
Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Discordbot/2.0; +https://discordapp.com)
How to verify
Check that the source IP is in the public IP ranges Discord publishes. For the user agent, Discord says to look for the word Discordbot and not to match the whole string, because other parts can change.

How often is Discordbot impersonated?

We have not measured requests claiming to be Discordbot yet, so we show no share.

This directory measures requests between 3 July 2026 and 28 September 2026. The fake crawler report covers its own, earlier window (late June to 21 September 2026), so its figures differ from the ones here. Read it for the method.

Should you block Discordbot?

Allow it if
people share your pages on Discord.
Block it if
you do not want preview cards on Discord.
What blocking changes
Discord builds a preview only from a 2xx response, so a link to a page that refuses Discordbot has no preview.

To block it, add this group to your robots.txt. Discord's pages about Discordbot do not mention robots.txt.

User-agent: Discordbot
Disallow: /

robots.txt only asks. It does nothing against a client that ignores it or only pretends to be Discordbot. Stopping those takes verification at your edge.
