Draft an llms.txt from your sitemap

Paste your sitemap or a list of page URLs. The generator groups the pages by section and writes the file in the llmstxt.org layout. What you paste stays in your browser.

How the draft is built

The first line is the site name as a heading, and the sentence you give becomes the summary under it. Each page then goes into a section named after the first part of its path, so /docs/quick-start is listed under Docs. A page that sits directly under the root goes into a section called Pages.

The text of each link comes from the last part of the URL, with hyphens and underscores turned into spaces. The home page and repeated URLs are left out, and the draft stops at 500 pages.

What to change before you publish

The link text is a guess from the URL. Replace it with the real title of each page. The layout also lets a link carry a short note after a colon, which helps where a title does not say what the page covers.

Remove the pages a reader would not need, such as sign-in pages, legal pages and tag archives. Then save the file as llms.txt at the root of the site, so that it answers at /llms.txt.

What llms.txt is and is not

llms.txt is a proposal published at llmstxt.org, not a standard. It is a Markdown file that points a language model to the pages of a site worth reading.

It does not change what a crawler may fetch. robots.txt does that, and the robots.txt checker shows what yours says to each AI bot.
