The benchmark

In September 2026 we ran eight scraping and browser-automation tools against Centinel and against DataDome: Browser-use, Firecrawl, Browserbase, kernel.sh, Playwright Stealth, Camoufox, Zyte, and Ulixee Hero.

Centinel detected all eight. DataDome detected 5 of 8.

When DataDome fits better

  • You want to start from a published plan. DataDome lists its plans on its pricing page, and prices some products by request volume. Centinel does not publish prices; you get a quote after a scoping call.
  • You need native mobile SDKs. DataDome documents a client-side JavaScript tag and iOS and Android SDKs in its getting-started guide. Centinel's integration guides do not include a native mobile SDK.
  • Your team already runs it well. If DataDome covers your important routes and the traffic that worries you, keep it. Add a second layer only where a test shows a gap.

Where Centinel fits

Centinel fits when browser-like automation still reaches a route that matters, such as content pages, sign-up, or an API used by your own front end. In the September test, Centinel detected all eight tools, including Browser-use, Browserbase, and Ulixee Hero, which DataDome did not detect.

It also fits teams that need to tell declared crawlers apart. Centinel separates declared and verified crawlers from spoofed or hidden automation, so search engines and approved partners can get a different policy than a scraper using their name. You can check one address with the crawler verification tool.

DataDome's server-side modules include Akamai EdgeWorkers, Apache, AWS CloudFront, Cloudflare, Fastly, HAProxy, Nginx, Node.js, Next.js, and Varnish, among others, per its integration list. Its regional endpoints are listed in the API server documentation. Centinel's guides are on the integrations page, and its security posture is in the trust center.

Setup effort and pricing model

Both products install at a similar point: a module on the CDN, edge, or server that asks for a decision, plus browser-side collection. The effort depends on your stack more than on the vendor. Plan for one engineer who can change the CDN or proxy configuration, the owner of the protected workflow, and a rollback path.

For pricing, DataDome publishes its plans. Centinel quotes per deployment: bring your domain, typical and peak traffic, and current stack. The site audit is free and needs no card.

Migrating from DataDome

  1. Pick the routes. List the routes where automation causes the most cost, and the automation you want to keep, such as search crawlers and monitoring.
  2. Run side by side. Add Centinel in observe mode on those routes while DataDome keeps enforcing. Nothing changes for visitors yet.
  3. Compare decisions. Review where the two products disagree, using the tools in the table above and any workflow you can reproduce safely.
  4. Move enforcement route by route. Switch one route to Centinel's policy, check legitimate-user completion and error rates, then continue.
  5. Remove the old module last. Keep DataDome in place until each route has run on the new policy long enough to trust it, then remove its integration.

The proof-of-concept scorecard turns these steps into a written evaluation plan.

FAQ

Is Centinel a DataDome alternative?

Yes. Both detect automated traffic and return a decision your integration enforces. In the September 2026 test, Centinel detected 8 of the 8 tools and DataDome detected 5.

Can I run Centinel alongside DataDome?

Yes. Centinel works alongside an existing stack. Run it in observe mode next to DataDome, compare the decisions, and decide from your own traffic.

Does Centinel publish its prices?

No. Contact the team for current pricing, included usage, and contract terms. The site audit is free.

Where does Centinel store data?

Data is stored in the EU. Centinel is certified to ISO/IEC 27001 and assessed against SOC 2 Type 1. Details are in the trust center.
